Give Thanks

Posted by cjoshua15 on November 8, 2006

Have you ever wondered how many holidays we have that were created by Hallmark so they could further their monopoly on the greeting card industry? You know, like Grandparents Day or Friendship Day. We should consider those every day. We don’t wait until one time a year to send our grandparents a card to tell them we love them or once a year to tell a friend how dear they are to us.

Thanksgiving is a holiday unique to only the United States. Sure, other countries have a Thanksgiving Day, but it is celebrated on a different day and does not have the same meaning as our Thanksgiving here in the United States. Have you built traditions with your family for the Thanksgiving holiday? Do you keep in mind all the things you are truly thankful for this time of year? We are here because God gave some pilgrims the vision of a nation free from persecution of religion. We are able to worship our God because they sacrificed themselves in search of a place where they could be free to worship God. This we should be extremely thankful for.

Our lists are probably too long to write explicitly but have you tried sitting with your family at the holiday dinner table and sharing what you are thankful for. You may be surprised to hear what your kids or grandkids are thankful for. There are many great ideas for Thanksgiving traditions that you can start with your family and you can come up with your own. Just remember, God was there when they chose to sail for a free country and He gave them what they needed to celebrate that first Thanksgiving dinner. For that they gave thanks and so should we. Our lives are much different than those in countries where God is banned and life is jeopardized for any form of worship to Him. Are you thankful for that right to turn the TV channel when you don’t like what is on? It could be the only channel in some places. What about the freedom to attend the church of your choice? We take for granted that we can go to church let alone pick which one we attend.

Take a minute to inventory those things which you are truly thankful for and give thanks to God. We don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to thank God for all that He has done for us, but do take this opportunity to be reminded of all that we have because of Him.

Our thanks to the Lord for all that He is and all that He does. We are nothing without Him and for those brave enough to give of themselves to keep our nation free and those willing to spread the name of God in nations that aren’t free we give our thanks and prayers. It is truly ONE NATION UNDER GOD.

“Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 106:1
